Did you know that the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) is going places? I’m talking to your backyard. A recent count shows more jurisdictions adopting the IgCC, setting up a big push for adoption of IgCC’s March 2012 release.

We have talked about the IgCC on the blog, before. The IgCC is one of the first commercially-recognizable green construction codes. The code (1.0) provides an alternative compliance tract through ASHRAE 189.1. The original unofficial version (1.0) of the IgCC was released for public comment through 2010. A second unofficial version (2.0) was released for comment through this month. The culmination of all of this work will be the March 2012 release of the 2012 IgCC - the first official release.

If you want to learn more about the code and how it works, I’d suggest checking out this Powerpoint presentation from Chris Cheatham.

So, where are we now? I have talked about Richland, WA, Rhode Island and Maryland; the IgCC has talked about a few localities in New Hampshire and Arizona. Another recent article says that Florida, North Carolina, Oregon, and Scottsdale, Ariz., have become the latest jurisdictions to go IgCC.

Despite not having an official code, cities and states are warming to the IgCC. By the time the ICC (the largest code provider in the world) releases an official code in just 6 months, you have to assume that IgCC chatter will have caught the ears of nearly every jurisdiction in the U.S. It will be interesting to see who holds out in 2012.
